As defined by the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law (PAL) of Japan, Article 2 (Definitions, Paragraph 4. The term "medical device" used in this law refers to equipments, instruments etc. specified by the MHLW ordinance and which are intended for use in the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of disease in humans or animals, or intended to affect the structure and functions of the human or animal body.
